To advantage, beverage cartons are easily discernable form other collected materials and no special place for their storage should be sought. They can be collected together with plastics or paper, e.g., and sorted later directly at the container. In view that milk or cream are typical products sold in beverage cartons, emptied cartons should not be stored for a long time, in order any rise of unpleasant odour to be avoided. Therefore, used beverage cartons should be better rinsed with water before their longer storage.
What‘s Going on with Beverage Cartons?
Sorting in Households
30 collapsed beverage cartons will fit in the basket of 20 l volume
Containers for Beverage Cartons
more than 9,3 mil. citizens live in towns, where the collection of sorted beverage cartons is organised
Containers designed for the collection of beverage cartons are easily identifiable by their orange label. Somewhere beverage cartons are sorted together with plastics or paper, while in other areas plastic bags are used for the purpose, subject to the local conditions and equipment available in local final sorting plants.
more than 4,535 tons of beverage cartons waste collected annually from Czech municipalities
The production of beverage cartons is substantially lower compared to other sources of package waste. Therefore, in many cases smaller vehicles are used for collecting beverage cartons from orange containers. Collection intervals are often longer. In certain locations beverage cartons are sorted similarly like plastics and paper and get final segregation on final sorting lines.
Final Sorting Line
12.51 tons of beverage cartons are subjected to final sorting and compression every day
The final sorting lines designed for treating beverage cartons are mostly the same lines that are used for handling paper or plastic waste. The lines should clear the sorted beverage cartons of any foreign material and prepare good raw material in the quality required by the customer.
Where the beverage cartons are collected together with other sorted waste (plastics or paper) the final sorting line shall separate the individual sorted materials from each other.
The packets of compressed beverage cartons are transported form the line to the final processing plant.
75 % of high-quality paper includes a beverage carton
In the Czech Republic there are two methods used for processing wasted beverage cartons. First, they are processed in paper mills as they contain paper fibres of high quality. Paper mills process the cartons in the same way as scrap paper – by converting them into paper stock by boiling in water. Paper fibres are used for the production of new paper products, while aluminium and polyethylene are separated and used, e.g., as auxiliary fuel in cement works or in other applications. Alternatively, used beverage cartons can be utilised for the manufacture of construction and insulation boards in the building industry. If it is the case, the sorted beverage cartons are disintegrated, washed, dried and pressed to form the boards at a temperature of about 200 °C. The boards feature properties similar to plasterboards and find similar applications, too.
30,000 pieces of beverage cartons are required for the manufacture of building boards for one-family house
Sorted beverage cartons are used either for production of high quality paper, or they are used, after treatment, for production of construction and insulation boards, for floors, partition walls or even for building whole houses. More than five tons of these boards are required for building a smaller family house.
